Suidooster-sterre skitter in November by Suidoosterfees-inryteater in Kaapstad

Soos verlede jaar word dié feestelike ervaring by kykNET Atlantic Studios in Kaapstad aangebied.

Suidooster stars shine at Suidoosterfees drive-in theatre in Cape Town in November

The Suidoosterfees and kykNET’s popular soapie Suidooster are joining forces to present an exciting drive-in theatre programme from 2 to 8 November 2021. Like last year, the event will be held at kykNET Atlantic Studios in Cape Town. Audiences will watch shows on the big screen from the comfort and safety of their vehicles while following the soundtrack on their car radios.

Every night festivalgoers will be welcomed at the venue by their favourite Suidooster stars. Suidooster-makietie on 2 November at 18:30 will celebrate the sixth anniversary of the kykNET soap opera. In addition to exceptional entertainment on stage, a very special episode, tipped off to be the surprise of the year, will be broadcast on the silver screen. Each vehicle will receive a gift-pack to the value of R600! Tickets are limited and proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust.

This year Kia will be present as a special sponsor throughout the drive-in theatre programme. Christo Valentyn, head of marketing at Kia, says that the car company is excited to be part of the initiative. “The power of music to unite and inspire people is something that strongly resonates with the Kia brand, and we’re excited to be a part of this year’s Suidoosterfees,” he says. “Come have a look at our range of vehicles and experience the quality and comfort that makes our cars so popular for yourself!”

Drive-in theatre ticket prices range between R150 and R300 per vehicle, and the programme for 2 to 8 November will feature top local artists in a variety of shows.

In Die liedjiemakers on 3 November at 20:00, celebrated musicians will join young new talent who participated in the Suidoosterfees and Jakes Gerwel Foundation’s Songwriting mentorship programme in 2021, on stage. Frazer and Deniel Barry, Earl Witbooi, Natasha van der Merwe, Loukmaan Adams, Eden Classens, Jerome Rex, Jodi Jantjies, Breyten Treurnicht, Brumelda Bell, Nicol Klopper, Gabriel Plaatjies and Naaim Briesies will perform.

ABBA’s greatest hits on 4, 5 and 6 November at 20:00 will take audiences on a musical journey back to the disco floors of the 70s and 80s when Gary Naidoo, Riyaan Cornelius, Janine Cornelius, Jon-E, Celest Dreyer and JJ Petersen take the drive-in stage with Dancing Queen.

Comedy lovers should not miss Lag my kla’ on 8 November at 20:00. The show will conclude this year’s mentorship programme for young comedians on a hilarious note. The Lag my kla’ competition winners will show their mettle with established comedians like Shimmy Isaacs, Francois van As, Lunga Tshuka, Schalk Bezuidenhout and Aunty Betty.

Prof. Brian Figaji, Suidoosterfees board chairman, explains that the festival’s drive-in theatre concept took shape in 2020 after Covid-19 pandemic restrictions disrupted theatre productions. “After an enthusiastic response from the public to our drive-in programme at kykNET Atlantic Studios last year, we have decided to continue with the initiative in 2021. By staging productions in a safe environment, we are able to create valuable opportunities for artists.”

Cape Town’s mayor, Dan Plato, invites the public to support the drive-in initiative. “For 18 years the city of Cape Town’s own Suidoosterfees has offered visitors the best in arts and entertainment. I would like to encourage people who have not yet experienced this unique occasion, to really consider doing so.” The drive-in theatre offers entertainment in a safe manner, compliant with national pandemic safety protocols.

Jaco Loubser, producer of Suidooster, is excited by the possibilities opened up with the drive-in theatre concept. “Suidooster and the festival collaborate closely. With the drive-in we can combine different elements creatively: television, theatre and film. On behalf of the Suidooster cast, I would like to invite fans to come and brush shoulders with their favourite characters.”

Tickets for all shows from 2 to 8 November at kykNET Atlantic Studios can be booked at Computicket. The festival’s drive-in initiative is the result of collaboration with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture; the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport; City of Cape Town; kykNET; NATi, BASA and the Jakes Gerwel Foundation.
