Theatre, poetry, music and dance combine to tell a love story involving two gangs in the village of Spoorvallei. Rivals Hellas and the Pretty Boys are wrestling with similar issues: jealousy, recognition, self-image and respect. Yet, these youngsters also share the same dreams; it’s just that some dreams come true sooner! The only certainty in this story is: You are not your address! Loosely based on West Side Story and the moving tale of Romeo and Juliet.

When Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller meet in 1887, the 25-year-old Annie feels like a person who has been incorrectly assembled, while the 12-year-old Helen is trapped in a dark limbo – without the ability to see, hear or speak. What follows is life-changing – a struggle between two broken individuals with battles around the dining room table and skirmishes in sign language. This story of two formidable women and the people surrounding them forces us to think about the lessons that trauma teaches us. Judi Hattingh, a 13-year-old learner from Curro Durbanville, takes her first steps on a professional stage in the role of Helen.

The company’s personal memories serve as starting points to sketch the relationship between mothers and their sons. Dance and drama are combined to create the narrative of an artist who travels back to his childhood. After a dancer’s mother dies, he wanders through the flashes of his memories, as well as the imagined secret life of his mother, to come to terms with his past, his identity, his family and his future.

In 1952, Abraham watches in horror as his house burns to the ground. He manages to salvage the sideboard which he made for his wife Stella after the Second World War. This precious piece of furniture finds a central place in their new home – a memory altar. Thirteen years later their existence is again threatened when the forced removals of the Group Areas Act are brutally implemented. In their battle to keep their house and their land, Abraham and Stella knock on every door. A moving story about loss in the face of a cruel system.

A story about a pedantic man who tries to maintain order in his social life and at work. When he gets home after a challenging work day, he finds two little balls inexplicably bouncing up and down in his lounge. This disruption of his daily routine makes him feel embarrassed in front of his neighbours, and he has to quickly find a way out of this dark, comical situation. Transferred to the Cape milieu, the timeless beauty of Kafka’s words is uniquely brought to new life.

First, Hans crossed the Rubicon, then he put a pair of horns on Herklaas; now he bursts the bio bubble! Huis Madeliefie’s residents are caged in by the level 5 lockdown. Hans realises that there is no plant medicine against this virus, and the residents are fed-up with the draconian rules. When Altoon Ahlers, a famous actor of yesteryear, beats Hans to become chair of the internal governing board, our hero makes a plan to dethrone him. He must simply get the residents on his side with the help of the juice from his forbidden fruit …

In the 1950s, Peter Blum was hailed as the most important poetic voice in Afrikaans of that decade. However, some considered his work “decadent” and spoke of his work representing a poetic “maggot cult”. With stinging satire, he lashed out at the Afrikaners and the literary holy cows of the time. In 1960, he and his wife, Hetta, left South Africa for England. It was, he said, “out of disgust.” Soon afterward, he put away his pen. Visitors were few, and the cord of the doorbell was removed. Hetta’s mental state deteriorated, and she became unhinged. Using source material, including letters and poems by Peter and Hetta, we follow in the footsteps of a singular figure in Afrikaans literature.

Suidoosterfees proudly presents the theatrical adaptation of Ronelda Kamfer’s acclaimed novel, Kompoun. This poignant story is narrated by two grandchildren of the Mckinney family, Nadia and Xavie, and explores themes of innocence, resilience and familial struggles within a harsh South African context. Staged in a circle, the ‘farm gate’ gives us direct access to both the internal and external factors affecting the lives of the characters, and their opportunities for breaking free from the chaos of their existence. Personal experiences are intertwined with cultural nuances, showcasing the beauty and complexity of the Afrikaaps language.

“What did my child say before he died? Did he call out to me?” This gripping play tells the story of Noah, a young boy who dreams of one day becoming a policeman and taking care of his mother and his community. One fateful day, he takes his usual walk to buy his daily packet of Lemon Creams … In this moving drama, award-winning theatre maker Christo Davids confronts themes that touch every South African: How do we deal on a daily basis with the many disabled people in our country, those who are simply different? Who protects them? Who is a voice for the voiceless? What are we to do about all the violence and corruption? Deeply moving and sometimes funny.

Toni Morrison said, “No one ever talks about the moment you found out that you were white. Or the moment you found out you were black. That’s a profound revelation. The minute you find that out, something happens. You have to renegotiate everything.” Bo Petersen excels in the multi-layered production that explores family secrets and unspoken histories, raising questions about identity. Winner of the Standard Bank Ovation award at the National Arts Festival in 2024.

Dusk descends on Arbeidsgenot in Oudtshoorn. Angelique Jacobs, a security guard at the Langenhoven Museum, prepares to lock up … And then the past begins to haunt her. What Angelique thought she knew and what she proclaims as the truth is challenged by the ghosts who have a completely different story to tell. Marianne Thamm, award-winning investigative journalist, debuts her first play. Her curiosity about who and what Langenhoven was and what he means today, led her to the women in his life. With humour and pathos, Thamm offers a new look at a history that everyone thinks they know.

When his younger brother Schalk suddenly dies, Louw returns to his family’s smallholding from London. Their father, Gert, now lives alone. Louw hasn’t been home in nine years and is surprised to see how dilapidated it is. Old wounds are opened as they try to avoid the truth, shift blame, test and manipulate each other, find common ground and avoid their family history. But the truth simmers inside an old white stinkwood tree – for decades a witness to everything that has happened on this family plot and a constant reminder of Amanda, wife and mother, who passed away 25 years ago. Awarded the Momentum Beleggings Aardklop prizes for best stage play, best new Afrikaans script and best actor for Frank Opperman.

The non-racial project is put under the spotlight as four characters – Prof. Simon Whitehead, his ‘coloured’ lover Dr. Angela Witten, their Zimbabwean colleague Prof. Emmanuel Kabwato, and student leader Noluthando Kakaza – clash in this explosive new play by Mike van Graan. Directed by Greg Homann, the Market Theatre’s artistic director, this edgy drama is set in 2016. Zuma is in power, corruption is rife, and the born-free students are on the march. This bold premiere production is both a searing critique and a call for reflection.

In Breytenbach’s last play, we are taken on a journey by the master, who imagines himself at his own funeral. Breyten enters into a consciousness-expanding and intimate conversation with an elderly stage actress. For one last time, he attempts to balance the score – leaving the old actress with the daunting task of paying homage by performing his final words … Verwelkingslied is Breyten Breytenbach’s moving swan song, written for Suidoosterfees shortly before his death in 2024, and dedicated to Antoinette Kellermann and Marthinus Basson.

Excitement and tension reign as a master and her assistant prepare for an impending visit. The industrious Gabrielle polishes and readies the waiting Augustine. There is stitching and anointing, sometimes to the extreme. Who are they waiting for? Will the hours of preparation, so meticulously executed, bear fruit? Why does the one thing that seemingly binds them together, hang like a sword over their heads?
