Seuns weet
In samewerking met | In collaboration with Protea Boekhuis
MET | WITH Frederick Botha & Herschelle Benjamin
Frederick Botha’s debut short story collection is fearless, yet at the same time vulnerable and tender. In it, a young white gay Afrikaans man attempts to name and make sense of his experiences of sexuality, faith, family life, self-acceptance, friendship, authorship and social reality. Seuns weet offers a fresh perspective on contemporary society.

Swart Ekonomiese Bemagtiging – wie baat werklik?
In samewerking met | In collaboration with Jacana Media & Netwerk24
Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) remains one of South Africa’s most controversial policies. Some analysts say it has created opportunities for black ownership and representation, while others argue that it benefits a small elite and fails South Africans who still live in poverty. Are you racist if you call for the end of BEE, or are you protecting black elites if you support it? What is the way forward?

Adam en die Nico
In samewerking met | In collaboration with SBA & Artscape
In hierdie lesing bied prof.
In 2026, Artscape (formerly the Nico Malan Theatre) celebrates its 55th anniversary. The legendary playwright Adam Small, whose Kanna hy kô hystoe was first staged here, would have turned 90 this year. Small’s relationship with the theatre was ambivalent – he had to get a permit to see his own play. In this lecture, Prof. Steward van Wyk offers an overview of Small’s relationship with the theatre. He highlights, among other things, the performance history of his dramas, the unveiling of the SBA’s bust, and discusses eight unpublished limericks in which Small, with his trademark satire, pokes fun at the ‘Nico’.

Agter tronkmure – straf ons of genees ons?
In samewerking met | In collaboration with Tafelberg
MET | WITH Edwin Cameron, Rebecca Gore, Sohela Surajpal, Pieter Groenewald & Heindrich Wyngaard
South Africa has the largest prison population in Africa. The murder rate is sky-high, and it doesn’t seem as if prisons deter criminals. Quite the opposite. How do we break this vicious cycle? Some call for the reinstatement of the death penalty. Others strongly oppose corporal punishment for minor offences. But what are our prisons really like? Are we set on punishing people with inhumane, squalid cells? What must we do to truly rehabilitate?
