Adam Small 90
Made possible by the Foundation for Empowerment through Afrikaans (SBA) and presented by the Proscenium Drama Competition
Adam Small would have celebrated his 90th birthday in 2026. It is ten years since his passing in 2016. Through this series of short stage works, the SBA honours this icon of Afrikaans literature. Four writers were invited to take any aspect of or quotation from Adam Small’s work and, in response, create new texts for young performers from the Proscenium Drama Competition. The stage works will present a reimagining of Adam Small’s work that will engage contemporary audiences in an accessible and meaningful way. The four productions are presented as two double bills.

Ongekarteerde drome
MET | WITH Jessica Chandler & Jeswaan Boneparte
SKRYWER | WRITER Chester Miggels
REGIE | DIRECTOR Martlie Jordaan
‘That is why I could never understand it.’ – Kanna hy kô hystoe
This quotation by Adam Small is a powerful metaphor for dreams that are not always seen or understood. Dreams do not necessarily lend themselves easily to words, yet every dream exists within its own reality.Ongekarteerde drome explores the tension between dreams and reality, examining themes such as fear, expectation and identity, while asking how we define ourselves when understanding is absent.

MET | WITH Kayle Farmer & Giovanni Cloete

‘… and so they fell by the wayside’ from ‘Evangeliesasieverslag’ in Kitaar my kruis
Everyone is on a journey with a dream or destination in mind, yet circumstances beyond our control sometimes prevent us from reaching our destination. In many communities, completing matric is a major achievement – a moment of pride for parents and communities, and a reminder that education is regarded as a precious privilege. Langs die pad uitsak places a spotlight on why education is essential, as well as on the obstacles that prevent young people from completing their schooling.

Tussen vlugte
MET | WITH Amelie Bestbier & Jayden Pekeur
SKRYWER | WRITER Miandra Hayward
REGIE | DIRECTOR Dean Smith
Kanna: ‘Dit was die ander ek.’
Kanna: ‘It was the other self.’
Roeslyn: ‘… and Kanna’s heart wasn’t really here either.’
In Kanna hy kô hystoe we witness the consequences of Kanna’s absence from the perspective of his family and community. In this reinterpretation, Liam and Jana sit at the airport waiting for their flight. From both their viewpoints, the inner conflict becomes clear: the excitement of new possibilities set against the feeling of leaving behind the familiar and the people they love. Like Kanna, Liam cannot shake the guilt of leaving his family to their own fate, while Jana struggles to connect with her origins as she has become an ‘other self’ abroad.

MET | WITH Bronwynne Neer & Emma Nelson
SKRYWER | WRITER Hein Poole
REGIE | DIRECTOR Rafiek Mammon
‘To belong. That’s the secret of living. To belong man. Believe me. To belong!’
‘To belong. That’s the secret of living. To belong man. Believe me. To belong!’ – Die Krismis van Map Jacobs
Adam Small wrote powerfully about the Group Areas Act and the forced separation of people along racial lines. Today, these divisions still exist, but they often run along the fault line between rich and poor. Waar oekal djy belong explores the tension and conflict that arise when two young people from vastly different neighbourhoods cross into each other’s worlds, with a parent who works and lives in an affluent area. The play poses questions about belonging, loss and the human need for connection in a society that remains deeply divided.

How often do you prepare for days for an audition? How often do you tarnish your name before a casting director who simply shouts ‘next!’? How many times do you sing until the veins on your forehead feel like they might burst, only to hear that someone younger, fitter and with whiter teeth got the role? Two actors share their stories – the highs and the lows of what really happens behind the scenes, and just how hard you have to work for just a call-back, irrespective of whether it’s to play the wolf in a reimagined version of Little Red Riding Hood or to be a featured extra in a Vin Diesel film.

In this world première of Hennie Aucamp’s delightfully mischievous, laugh-out-loud satyr play, two ageing ‘frenemies’, Beulah and Freda, find a breathtaking young Adonis suddenly on their doorstep – and before long, the proverbial fox is loose in the chicken coop. This adults-only comedy of bad manners proves that the heart (and certain other body parts) refuse to retire quietly, and that one is never too old for one last roll in the hay.

Ouma slaan ’n ses hemel toe is a poetic lament of grief about miscarriage, fertility, faith and loss. Through metaphors drawn from numbers, politics, family and food, the work brings guilt, love and what might have been into clear focus. Expect scandal, gossip and a court case that unfolds like a circus. How did the most famous man in the world become a pariah in his adopted country?

CHOREOGRAAF | CHOREOGRAPHER Andile Vellem
Andile gebruik Suid-Afrikaanse Gebaretaal as primêre bewegingstaal.
Unmute is a contemporary dance work choreographed by Andile Vellem, drawing on his lived experience as a deaf dancer and using South African Sign Language as its primary movement language. Bringing together performers of mixed abilities, the work challenges conventional ideas of communication, expression, and inclusion, offering a powerful vision of collaboration and integration through dance.
