Dié eenvroustuk wat die eerste keer in 1977 opgevoer is, is ’n kragtige en diepsinnige monoloog wat die lewe van ’n huisvrou ondersoek en temas van onderdrukking, bevryding en sosiale kommentaar aanraak. Deur elemente van satire, klug en drama te kombineer, en met die gebruik van humor, ironie en emosionele intensiteit, vertel die huisvrou – wat deurgaans naamloos bly – van haar daaglikse bestaan, haar stryd en frustrasies. Sy beskryf haar verhouding met haar man, gesin en die samelewing, en belig die beperkende rolle en verwagtinge wat op moderne vroue geplaas word.

First performed in 1977, this one-woman play is a powerful and thought-provoking monologue that explores the life of a housewife, delving into themes of oppression, liberation and social commentary. Combining elements of satire, farce and drama, and using humour, irony, and emotional intensity, the housewife – unnamed throughout the play – recounts her daily life, struggles and frustrations. She describes her relationships with her husband, family and society, highlighting the restrictive roles and expectations placed on modern-day women.

Hy verander in ’n oogwink: Van ’n doodgelukkige kind na ’n moeë volwassene, dekades verouder deur haglike hoofopskrifte, tragiese gebeure en die lot van die mensdom wat hopeloos te swaar is vir sy jong skouers om te dra. On a perfectly ordinary morning, at a perfectly ordinary daycare centre, three-year-old Samuel experiences the ineluctable destroyer of innocence – the news. He changes in the blink of an eye: from a blissfully happy child to a weary adult, aged decades by dire headlines, tragic events and the fate of humanity, all hopelessly too heavy for his young shoulders to bear. This absurd tragicomedy deals with the toll it takes to live in a greedy world where everything is collapsing. It is a love letter to childhood, and at the same time, a reminder of the one truth that every adult knows: growing up is not child’s play.

’n Tienjarige dogter vind toevallig uit van ’n suster wat twee jaar voor haar geboorte oorlede is. Dié dogter was die Franse skrywer Annie Ernaux, wat in 2022 die Nobelprys vir letterkunde ontvang het. Skielik was Annie nie meer ’n enigste kind nie, maar die plaasvervanger vir ’n groot afwesigheid wat voortleef in haar ouers se woordelose verdrietigheid. Haar suster moes sterf sodat sy as die ‘vervanging’ kon leef. ’n Ragfyn stuk oor skuld, familie en verlies.

A 10-year-old girl accidentally discovers the existence of a sister who died two years before she was born. That girl was Annie Ernaux, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2022. Suddenly, Annie was no longer an only child, but the substitute for a profound absence that lives on in her parents’ unspoken sorrow. Her sister had to die so that she could live as the ‘replacement’. A delicate piece about guilt, family and loss.

’n Direkteur van ’n dieretuin plaas sy eie ambisies bo die welsyn van sy diere wanneer hy ’n vals olifant van rubber skep om geld te spaar. ’n Swaan word weens openbare dronkenskap afgedank uit sy pos by die munisipale park. ’n Leeu weier om die Christene in die arena te eet – nie omdat hy vir hulle omgee nie, maar omdat hy vermoed hulle gaan binnekort aan bewind wees. ’n Wêreld van absurde burokrasie, arrogansie en die komiese nagevolge van misplaaste besluite.

A zoo director puts his own ambitions above the well-being of his animals when he creates a fake rubber elephant to save money. A swan is dismissed from his position at the municipal park for public drunkenness. A lion refuses to eat the Christians in the arena – not because he cares for them, but because he suspects they’ll soon be in charge of the state. A world of absurd bureaucracy, arrogance and the comic consequences of misguided decisions.

Alles moes vir die eerste keer uitgepluis word: liefde, kinders en huishou. Nou dat die laatlammetjie die huis gaan verlaat, het Adam en Eva binnekort weer net mekaar vir geselskap. Sien hulle kans vir nog ’n honderd jaar saam en sal hulle sondes hulle ontsien? Na baie goed en kwaad het hulle vir oulaas ’n appeltjie met mekaar te skil. ’n Komedie oor saam ou bene maak, veral as een die ander ’n ribbebeen skuld.

Centuries after being cast out of paradise, Adam and Eve reflect on marriage. Look, being the OG couple is no easy task, you know? Everything had to be figured out for the first time – love, children and how to run a household. Now that the ‘afterthought child’ is about to leave home, Adam and Eve will soon have only each other for company again. Do they have it in them for another hundred years together, and what about the whole serpent-sin thing? After much good and evil, they have one last axe to grind between them. A comedy about growing old together – especially when one still owes the other a rib.

After the forty-night memorial of his late wife, Luqmaan receives an unexpected visit from a former friend, Junaid. The two have not seen each other in over fifteen years. Albert Pretorius trek onder die opruiende begeleiding van Schalk Joubert die skrapnel van ’n vreesaanjaende gewone lewe, skerf vir skerf, uit ’n mislukte huwelik in die buitenste ruimte van Duitsland en die bevoorregte, prekêre gemors van middelklas-Suid-Afrika. Dis ’n storie oor ouerskap en die soeke na behoort en sin maak, gewikkel in die vlamjas van verse en verbysterende musiek, geweef rondom ’n keur uit Danie Marais se vier digbundels. Dis rock-teater oor ’n verlede wat die hede wurg en ’n wit ou wat saam met sy dogter en ’n progressiewe wêreld net een ding vir Kersfees wil hê: ‘Om nie meer altyd te moet weet hoe ’n middeljarige wit man voel oor alles nie.’

Albert Pretorius shreds the fabric of a terrifyingly ordinary life that draws from a failed marriage in the outer reaches of Germany and the privileged mess of middle-class South Africa. This is a story about parenthood and the search for belonging and making sense, wrapped in the flame coat of poetry and bewildering music, woven around a selection from Danie Marais’s four poetry collections. It is rock theatre about a past that strangles the present and a white guy who, with his daughter and a progressive world, wants only one thing for Christmas: ‘To no longer always have to know how a middle-aged white man feels about everything.’

Babs en Sandy leef op die leftovers van hul verlede. Die vier mure van hul caravan ken ’n klomp geheime, en al is dit ’n humble huisie, is dit hul pondokpaleis. Sandy het haar swerwersbestaan langs die N7 koebaai gegroet om ’n lewe te begin in Rodney se karavaan net buite Springbok, die bottel eers gebêre om Babs groot te maak. En saam met dit kom groeipyne en erfsondes. As volwasse vrou probeer Babs haar bes om die bloed van haar herinneringe skoon te was en aan te beweeg as onderwyseres by die plaaslike laerskool. Tog haal die stofstorms haar keer op keer in. Die koue vuur van Sandy en Babs se onthou neem die gehoor op ’n verbeeldingsvlug, ’n treinrit tot diep binne waar die grense begin grys word.

Babs and Sandy live off the leftovers of their past. The four walls of their caravan hold many secrets, and although it may be humble, it is their palace, their own sandcastle. Sandy said goodbye to her wandering life along the N7 highway to start anew in Rodney’s caravan just outside Springbok, setting the bottle aside to raise Babs. And with that came growing pains and inherited sins. As an adult woman, Babs tries her best to wash clean the blood of her memories and move on as a teacher at the local primary school. Yet she cannot escape the dust storms. The ashes of Sandy and Babs’ memories take the audience on a flight of imagination – a train ride deep into where the borders begin to blur.

Soos Hanna het Maria ’n kjeent by God gesmeek en God het gegee. Dawid en Maria is vir Dammas gegee. Op ’n Sondag in 1867 word hulle kamp, Nona-Ams, deur Boesmans oorval terwyl die grootmense ’n kerkdiens op Besondermeid bywoon. Twee-en-dertig Nama-kjeeners, hulle oppassers en honde word doodgemaak. Dieselfde God wat vir Dawid en Maria gegee het, vat vir Dammas en 31 anner Nama-kjeeners terug. En gee en terugvat is erger as steel.

A grudge, they say, is a painful thing to nurse. Nama and San people are peaceful folk. Or that’s how white people portray them. They don’t fight. They give when it is needed, and they don’t take. Like Hanna, Maria begged God for a child, and God gave her one. Dawid and Maria were given Dammas. On a Sunday in 1867, their camp, Nona-Ams, was attacked by San people while the adults were attending a church service at Besondermeid. Thirty-two Nama children, their caretakers and dogs were killed. The same God who gave to Dawid and Maria, took back Dammas and 31 other Nama children. Giving and then taking back is worse than stealing.

Today, Auntie Mareldia (Ummi) bustles about trying to get everything neat and tidy, because her estranged granddaughter, Fahima, is coming to visit. She claims to be there to record Ummi’s stories for research, but in truth she wants Ummi, just for once, to be honest about everything she so easily sweeps under the carpet. Tessa is nie onder ’n kalkoen uitgebroei nie. Sy wéét vanaand se funksie en die belaglike ‘toekenning vir lewenslange bydrae’ wat sy ontvang, is om subtiel te sê haar tyd is verby. Tessa gaan nie opdaag nie en die stotterende Thomas het sy hande vol om haar te oortuig om tog te gaan. Holm en Smith speel die verhoog vuurwarm in hierdie stuk oor seekatte en wat ons doen om oukei te wees. Daar is baie om oor te lag, maar vir balans, ook heelwat om oor te huil.

Tessa was not born yesterday. She knows that tonight’s event and the ridiculous ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ she’s receiving, subtly say that her time is over. Tessa will not show up, and the stuttering Thomas has his hands full trying to convince her to attend. Holm and Smith light up the stage in this play about octopuses and what we do to be okay. There’s plenty to laugh about, but for balance, there is also quite a bit to cry about.

Ont- is ’n solostuk wat die grootwordproses van ’n jong Afrikaner ontleed. Die verteller staan op die drumpel van selfaanvaarding en bevryding, maar moet eers ’n bestekopname doen van die herinneringe uit sy kinderjare en die spoke van sy ouers. Hy lê verskeie grepe soos familiefoto’s voor die gehoor se voete neer en neem hulle op ’n reis van verlies, ontnugtering, identiteit, pyn en vreugde. Ont- is die eerste keer in 2011 opgevoer en het vyf jaar lank plaaslik en internasionaal getoer en onder meer vier Fiësta-toekennings, ’n Woordtrofee en ’n goue Standard Bank Ovation-prys gewen. In dié herbesoek word die verhaal, karakter en fiktiewe herinneringe deur ’n meer volwasse lens bekyk.
Ont- is a solo piece that analyses the coming of age of a young Afrikaner. The narrator stands on the threshold of self-acceptance and liberation, but must first take stock of his childhood memories and settle the ghosts of his parents. Through precious and familiar family objects he traces a journey of loss, disillusionment, identity, pain and joy. Ont- was first performed in 2011 and toured locally and internationally for five years, winning four Fiësta awards, a Woordtrofee and a Gold Standard Bank Ovation Award. In this production the story, character and fictional memories are revisited through a more mature lens.

Dana is dishonourably discharged from the army, but first he takes a trip to Hall 24. This raw, revealing memoir asks: How does a boy become a man? A boy who can’t get a girl’s attention? A boy who isn’t good enough for the army? Seun is a moving account of growing up during the death throes of a political system, of masculinity and honour, and of love that ultimately conquers all.

Hierdie stuk is geskep as ’n fisieke en performatiewe komiese besinning oor die raakpunte tussen kontemporêre tegnologie en Die Nar, Jan Alleman en Die Onskuldige. Met die noukeurige gebruik van fisieke spel en Buckland se aanleg vir satiriese verbale tekste en vokale spel, verken die produksie hoe sosiale media (soos ervaar deur die selfoon en, meer onlangs, vroeë weergawes van KI) die lewens van moderne mense beïnvloed.
This work is conceived as a physical and performative comic meditation on the interface between contemporary tech and The Fool, The Everyman and The Innocent. Using precise physicality, and Buckland’s propensity for satirical verbal scripts and vocality, the show explores how social media, experienced through the mobile phone, and more recently, early iterations of AI, is impacting the lives of contemporary humans.

For one last time, he attempts to balance the score – leaving the old actress with the daunting task of paying homage by performing his final words … Verwelkingslied is Breyten Breytenbach’s moving swan song, written for Suidoosterfees shortly before his death in 2024, and dedicated to Antoinette Kellermann and Marthinus Basson.
