In 2025, several productions were presented as part of the Suidoosterfees’s NATi Theatre Festival. This photo collage provides an overview of highlights from the programme.
Verwelkingslied
Breyten Breytenbach se laaste toneelstuk was een van vanjaar se hoogtepunte. Breytenbach het die stuk in opdrag van die fees geskryf en dit opgedra aan Antoinette Kellermann en Marthinus Basson. Marí Borstlap het die uitdaging aanvaar om die stuk te regisseer en Kellermann was op die verhoog saam met Dawid Minnaar. Breyten Breytenbach’s final play was one of this year’s highlights. He wrote the piece on commission from the festival and dedicated it to Antoinette Kellermann and Marthinus Basson. Kompoun
Kompoun is die Suidoosterfees se verhoogweergawe van Ronelda Kamfer se gelyknamige debuutroman wat reeds in Frans en Nederlands vertaal is en in 2026 in Amerika uitgegee word. Feesgangers was in vervoering oor Jolyn Phillips se verwerking daarvan en Lee-Ann van Rooi se interpretasie as regisseur. Die twee jong akteurs Melissa de Vries en Angelo Bergh het gehore gaande gehad met hul spel. Kompoun is genooi vir verdere speelvakke vanjaar by die Nasionale Kunstefees in Makhanda, die Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees op Stellenbosch, en in 2026 by die KKNK op Oudtshoorn. Kompoun is Suidoosterfees’s stage adaptation of Ronelda Kamfer’s debut novel of the same name, which has already been translated into French and Dutch, and will be published in the United States in 2026. Festivalgoers were captivated by Jolyn Phillips’s adaptation and Lee-Ann van Rooi’s interpretation as director. Young actors Melissa de Vries and Angelo Bergh wowed audiences with their performances. Kompoun has been invited for further runs this year at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, the Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees in Stellenbosch, and in 2026 at the KKNK in Oudtshoorn. The Good White
In die middel van Mike van Graan se nuwe toneelstuk, wat afspeel in 2016 tydens die hoogtepunt van die #FeesMustFall-protesaksies, staan professor Simon Whitehead, wat ’n geloofwaardige reputasie verwerf het deur sy betrokkenheid by die anti-apartheidstryd. Zubayr Charles se toneelstuk Please, don’t call me moffie, met Anzio September in die hoofrol, was ’n reusesukses by vanjaar se Suidoosterfees. Dit was die eerste produksie waarvan alle vertonings uitverkoop was. Zubayr Charles’ play Please, don’t call me moffie starrng Anzio September was a resounding success at this year’s Suidoosterfees. All performances were the first to be sold out at the festival, the play bravely addresses important issues in our society, and Zubayr’s team knows how to draw feet from our communities into the theatre.
