Jeug- jazzreeks
Die Suidoosterfees is ’n vennoot van Artscape se Jeug- jazzreeks, ’n gevestigde ontwikkelingsprojek wat daarop gemik is om ’n nuwe generasie Suid-Afrikaanse jazzmusikante te ondersteun en te ontwikkel. Die projek het op 13 en 14 Junie 2025 plaasgevind en is vir die 22ste keer aangebied. Die Jeug- jazzreeks is spesifiek ontwerp om vaardigheidsoordrag tussen gevestigde professionele jazzkunstenaars en jong opkomende musikante te bevorder. Die Jeug-jazzreeks bly ’n belangrike platform waar jong musikante nie net waardevolle opleiding en mentorskap ontvang nie, maar ook die geleentheid kry om hul talent voor ’n groot gehoor te demonstreer. Deur hierdie vennootskap dra Artscape en die Suidoosterfees gesamentlik by tot die ontwikkeling van nuwe jazztalent en die voortbestaan van een van Suid-Afrika se belangrikste musikale erfenisse.
2025
Die tweedaagse konsertreeks van 2025 is voorafgegaan deur ’n reeks meesterklasse onder leiding van die bekende jazzmusikant en hoof van Jazzstudies aan die Universiteit van Kaapstad, prof. Amanda Tiffin. Hierdie geleenthede het deelnemers voorberei vir hul optredes en terselfdertyd bygedra tot die volhoubare ontwikkeling en voortbestaan van jazz as musiekgenre.
Veertien jong solokunstenaars het tydens die reeks hul uitsonderlike talent ten toon gestel en gehore beïndruk met uitvoerings van bekende jazzwerke, asook oorspronklike komposisies. Benewens die soliste het 163 jong musikante uit skooljazzgroepe deelgeneem. Skole wat verteenwoordig is, sluit onder meer Hoërskool Bergvliet, Hoërskool South Peninsula Hoër, Fairbairn College, Christel House, Cedar Hoër, Alexander Sinton Hoër, Hoërskool Belhar, De Kuilen Hoërskool, Parklands College en Settlers Hoër in. Deelnemers het uit uiteenlopende gemeenskappe regoor die Wes-Kaap gekom, waaronder Muizenberg, Grassy Park, Belhar, Maitland, Houtbaai, Retreat, Bergvliet, Heathfield, Athlone, Parow, Ottery, Somerset-Wes en Kuilsrivier.
Die projek is ondersteun deur sewe ervare mentors wat hul kundigheid met die jong kunstenaars gedeel het en ’n belangrike rol gespeel het in die ontwikkeling van tegniese vaardighede, verhoogervaring en professionele selfvertroue.
Die Jeug- jazzreeks het 1 022 gehoorlede gelok. Altesaam 184 jong deelnemers – bestaande uit 14 soliste en 163 lede van skooljazzgroepe – het aan die projek deelgeneem. Die soliste het hoofsaaklik uit jongmense tussen 15 en 34 jaar bestaan, terwyl die mentors ervare kunstenaars uit die volwasse ouderdomsgroep was.
Youth Jazz Series
The Suidoosterfees is a partner of Artscape’s Youth Jazz Series, an established development initiative aimed at supporting and nurturing a new generation of South African jazz musicians. The project took place on 13 and 14 June 2025 and was presented for the 22nd time. The Youth Jazz Series is specifically designed to promote skills transfer between established professional jazz artists and emerging young musicians. The Youth Jazz Series remains an important platform where young musicians not only receive valuable training and mentorship, but also have the opportunity to showcase their talent before a large audience. Through this partnership, Artscape and the Suidoosterfees jointly contribute to the development of new jazz talent and the preservation of one of South Africa’s most significant musical traditions.
2025
The 2025 two-day concert series was preceded by a series of masterclasses led by renowned jazz musician and Head of Jazz Studies at the University of Cape Town, Professor Amanda Tiffin. These sessions prepared participants for their performances while also contributing to the sustainable development and continued growth of jazz as a musical genre.
Fourteen young soloists showcased their exceptional talent during the series, impressing audiences with performances of well-known jazz standards as well as original compositions. In addition to the soloists, 163 young musicians from school jazz ensembles participated. Schools represented included Bergvliet High School, South Peninsula High School, Fairbairn College, Christel House, Cedar High School, Alexander Sinton High School, Belhar High School, De Kuilen High School, Parklands College and Settlers High School. Participants came from diverse communities across the Western Cape, including Muizenberg, Grassy Park, Belhar, Maitland, Hout Bay, Retreat, Bergvliet, Heathfield, Athlone, Parow, Ottery, Somerset West and Kuils River.
The project was supported by seven experienced mentors who shared their expertise with the young artists and played an important role in developing their technical skills, stagecraft and professional confidence.
The Youth Jazz Series attracted an audience of 1,022 people. A total of 184 young participants took part in the project, comprising 14 soloists and 163 members of school jazz ensembles. The soloists were primarily young people between the ages of 15 and 34, while the mentors were experienced artists from the adult age group.
