Die Suidoosterfees fokus daarop om ’n platform vir kunstenaars te skep en nuwe talent te ontwikkel. Om dit te bewerkstelling word verskeie ontwikkelingsprojekte en aktiwiteite reg deur die jaar aangebied.
Die ontwikkelingsprojekte sluit direk aan by die fees se doelstellings. Deur middel van die projekte probeer die Suidoosterfees ten beste om:
- Breër toegang tot geleenthede te bied
- Groter deelname volhoudend te verseker
- Om stimulasie, ’n gevoel van prestasie en nuwe ervarings aan deelnemers te bied
- Om vertroue, vaardighede en kreatiwiteit onder deelnemers te bevorder

The Suidoosterfees creates performance platforms for artists and is committed to developing new talent. All operational activities are directed towards meeting these objectives. Various activities and projects are presented throughout the year.

Die Suidoosterfees se Talentsoektogprojek, wat in sy sesde bestaansjaar is, fokus op jonger kunstenaars in alle genres met die doel om hulle deur ’n proses te sit waarvolgens hul talent geïdentifiseer en ontwikkel word, en die aktivering daarvan effektief bemark word.
The Suidoosterfees Talent Search project, currently in its sixth year, focuses on younger artists from all genres with the goal to guide them through a process of identifying, developing and marketing their talent.
Die Suidoosterfees se koreprojek het dit ten doel om ’n volhoubare opleidingsprogram in musiekgeletterdheid vir amateurkore en koorleiers te vestig. Hierdie jaarprojek behels oudisies, werkswinkels en meesterklasse vir dirigente. Die finale rondte van die koorkompetisie vind tydens die Suidoosterfees plaas, waarna wenkore aan die ATKV Koorgala – deel van die amptelike feesprogram – deelneem.
The Suidoosterfees Choir offers a sustainable music literacy training programme for amateur choirs and choir leaders. Activities of this year project include auditions, workshops and master classes for conductors. The final competition round is held during the festival in Cape Town, after which winning choirs perform in the ATKV Choir Gala – an official festival production.
Die Jong sterre-projek fokus op die ontwikkeling van jong teksskrywers. Die keuringsproses werk as volg: Jong skrywers stuur ’n teks of ’n uittreksel in saam met hul aansoeke. Die tekste word gelees deur ’n keuringspaneel, waarna die top 10 kandidate uitgenooi word om die konsep aan die paneel voor te lê. Vyf jong skrywers word gekies om deel te neem aan die projek. Die projek verloop in drie fases:
- ’n Skrywersmentorskap-program wat deur die Jakes Gerwel Stigting aangebied word. Dit sluit ’n skrywersresidensie van drie weke in die Paulet-huis op Somerset-Oos in;
- ’n Produksie-mentorskapsprogram; en
- ’n Speelvak tydens die Suidoosterfees
The Rising Stars project focuses on the development of young text writers. The selection process is as follows: Young writers submit a text or excerpt with applications. Texts are read by a selection panel, after which the 10 best candidates are invited to submit an expanded concept to the panel. Five writers are then selected to participate in three phases:
- A mentorship programme for writers, conducted by the Jakes Gerwel Foundation. The programme includes a three-week writers residency in Paulet House in Somerset East.
- A production mentorship programme
- A performance at Suidoosterfees
Die Jakes Gerwel Stigting en die Suidoosterfees bied ’n mentorskapprogram aan vir opkomende liriekskrywers en sangers wat oorspronklike liedjies in Afrikaans, Engels of isiXhosa skep. Dié program word aangebied as uitbreiding van die Suidoosterfees se bestaande Talentsoektog-kompetisie. Vir die mentorskapprogram is die stigting en die fees spesifiek op die uitkyk vir jong kunstenaars wat vars en opwindende lirieke skryf. Die vyf belowendste liriekskrywers sal deur ’n paneel van onafhanklike kenners aangewys word. Daarna volg intensiewe mentorskap oor ’n tydperk van drie weke in die stigting se Paulet-skrywershuis op Somerset-Oos vir vyf kandidate.
The Jakes Gerwel Foundation and the Suidoosterfees host a mentorship programme aimed at emerging songwriters and singers who create original material in Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa. This programme is an extension of the festival’s Talent Search competition. The foundation and the festival are particularly looking for young artists who write original and exciting lyrics. The five most promising songwriters are selected by a panel of independent experts, who then qualify for an intensive three-week mentorship programme at the foundation’s Paulet Writers House in Somerset East.
Aangesien skerpsketskomedie baie gewild is en die ontwikkeling van jong komediante dikwels afgeskeep word, is daar besluit om die Lag my kla’-kompetisie op die been te bring.
Die doel van die projek is om aan gevestigde komediante ’n geleentheid te bied om op te tree en sodoende ’n inkomste te verdien, en ook om talentvolle jong komediante te mentor. Na afloop van die beoordelingsproses is drie wenners gekies en uitgenooi om saam met gevestigde komediante in die Lag my kla’-produksie by die fees se inryteater op te tree.
Since stand-up comedy is very popular with audiences, and development of young comedians often fall short, the Lag my kla’ competition was conceptualised.
The aim of the project is to provide established comedians with a platform to perform and earn an income, and to mentor talented young comedians. After adjudication, three winners were chosen and invited to perform with established comedians in the Lag my kla’ show at the festival’s drive-in theatre.
