Kort voor lank is een van Suidoosterfees se gewildste programafdelings – ’n fees binne ’n fees waar uiteenlopende stories in treffende 30-minuut-vertonings tot lewe kom. In 2026 dien hierdie geliefde platform weer as ’n broeikas vir innoverende vernuwing, en bied dit aan feesgangers ’n toeganklike manier om nuwe stemme, genres en vorme van teater te ontdek.
Short and Sweet is one of the Suidoosterfees’ most popular programme sections – a festival within a festival where diverse stories come to life in compelling 30-minute performances. In 2026 this much-loved platform once again serves as an incubator for innovation and creativity, offering festivalgoers an accessible way to discover new voices, genres and theatrical forms.
’n Onbetwiste hoogtepunt op die program is Jakobregop – die première van Hennie Aucamp se heerlik ondeunde saterspel wat reeds in 1988 in Sjampanje vir ontbyt verskyn het, maar nog nooit voorheen opgevoer is nie. Hierdie slegs-vir-volwassenes komedie met Dean Balie, Marcel Meyer en Anzio September, en onder regie van Fred Abrahamse, speel sensueel, stylvol en skreeusnaaks met temas soos menslike begeerte, die weë van die ouderdom en die magsverhoudings tussen mense. Jakobregop is bedoel vir volwasse gehore wat nie skrik vir naaktheid nie.
An undisputed highlight of the programme is Jakobregop – the premiere of Hennie Aucamp’s delightfully mischievous satyr play, which appeared in 1988 in Sjampanje vir ontbyt but has never before been staged. This adults-only comedy, featuring Dean Balie, Marcel Meyer and Anzio September, and directed by Fred Abrahamse, plays sensually, stylishly and hilariously with themes such as human desire, the journey of ageing, and power dynamics between people. Jakobregop is intended for mature audiences who are not deterred by nudity.

Nog ’n spogitem op die program is Adam Small 90 – ’n reeks nuwe kort tekste waarin Small se werk herverbeel word deur jong skrywers en spelers van die Proscenium Dramakompetisie. In Ongekarteerde drome, Langs die pad uitsak, Tussen vlugte en Waar oekal djy belong word temas soos behoort, drome, identiteit en verlies ondersoek teen die agtergrond van ’n samelewing wat steeds deur ongelykhede gekenmerk word. Hierdie reeks, ondersteun deur die Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans, bring jong kunstenaars in kreatiewe gesprek met een van Suid-Afrika se mees invloedryke literêre figure.
Another standout item is Adam Small 90 – a series of new short texts in which Small’s work is reimagined by young writers and performers from the Proscenium Drama Competition. In Ongekarteerde drome, Langs die pad uitsak, Tussen vlugte and Waar oekal djy belong, themes of belonging, dreams, identity and loss are explored against the backdrop of a society still marked by inequality. Supported by the Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans, this series brings young artists into creative dialogue with one of South Africa’s most influential literary figures.
Veronique Jephtas, Ouma slaan ’n ses hemel toe
Ingrid Jonker se enigste toneelstuk kry nuwe lewe in ’n Seun na my hart, onder regie van Marí Borstlap, terwyl die digteres en aktrise Veronique Jephtas in Ouma slaan ’n ses hemel toe geloof, rou en verlies in ’n poëtiese, intieme solovertoning ondersoek.
Ingrid Jonker’s only play is given new life in ’n Seun na my hart, directed by Marí Borstlap, while poet and actress Veronique Jephtas explores faith, grief and loss in a poetic, intimate solo performance in Ouma slaan ’n ses hemel toe.
Op musiekfront staan Stadskoor, -Choir, -iKwayara sing diva-pop uit as ’n uitbundige produksie waarin ikoniese poptreffers uitgevoer word met ryk koorharmonieë, energieke vertolkings en ’n vars, kontemporêre klank. Die skitterende fopdoskunstenaar Manila von Teez bring haar legendariese flair, humor en glans na die verhoog wat sy met die Stadskoor, -Choir, -iKwayara-koor deel.
In Eenmanstuk neem De Klerk Oelofse feesgangers op ’n speelse en verrassende reis deur ’n versameling eenbedrywe, mimiek en pantomime. Met minimale hulpmiddels en ’n oorkoepelende fokus op die menslike verbeelding word die verhoog ’n oop speelveld waar teater as medium self ondersoek en bevraagteken word.
On the music front, Stadskoor, -Choir, -iKwayara sing diva-pop is an exuberant production featuring iconic pop hits performed with rich choral harmonies, energetic interpretations and a fresh, contemporary sound. The dazzling drag artist Manila von Teez shares the stage with the Choir and brings her legendary flair, humour and glamour to the proceedings.
In Eenmanstuk, De Klerk Oelofse takes festivalgoers on a playful and surprising journey through a collection of one-act plays, mime and pantomime. With minimal props and an overarching focus on the human imagination, the stage becomes an open playground where theatre as a medium is itself explored and questioned.
Jurgen Mc Ewan, Baggage
Humor en sosiale kommentaar loop hand aan hand in Baggage, Flip-flop en Pick a Struggle. In Baggage gebruik Jurgen McEwan en Aviwe Ngabom skerpskets-komedie om Suid-Afrikaanse werklikhede te belig teen die agtergrond van ’n lughawe.
Flip-flop met Deon Lotz en Gary Naidoo besin oor die harde werklikhede van akteurs se pogings om in ’n uitdagende bedryf te oorleef, terwyl Pick a Struggle se Zach Esau en Roland du Preez met spitsvondige humor en kwesbaarheid die ervarings van minderhede in ’n komplekse samelewing ondersoek.
Humour and social commentary go hand in hand in Baggage, Flip-flop and Pick a Struggle. In Baggage, Jurgen Mc Ewan and Aviwe Ngabom use sharp sketch comedy to illuminate South African realities against the backdrop of an airport.
Flip-flop, featuring Deon Lotz and Gary Naidoo, reflects on the harsh realities of actors’ attempts to survive in a challenging industry, while Pick a Struggle, with Zach Esau and Roland du Preez, uses incisive humour and vulnerability to examine the experiences of minorities in a complex society.
Bianca Flanders, Karamonkie
Kabaret en musiek blom in Karamonkie, waarin Bianca Flanders ’n speelse, grensverskuiwende keuse van kontemporêre skryfwerk, visuele teater en kamishibai aanbied. In Net ’n bietjie liefde bring André Schwartz hulde aan mentors en kunstenaarsvriende wat sy loopbaan help vorm het. En in Verweef skep Corneil Müller ’n intieme klankwêreld waarin stem, tjello en klavier saamvloei in ’n poëtiese refleksie oor herinnering en betekenis.
Die Waterfront Teaterskool se studente stel hul talent ten toon in Encore met sang, toneelspel en dans. En in The Magic of Musicals: From Good to Great bring Northlink Kollege-studente gunstelingnommers uit musiekblyspele met flair op die verhoog.
Cabaret and music flourish in Karamonkie, in which Bianca Flanders presents a playful, boundary-pushing selection of contemporary writing, visual theatre and kamishibai. In Net ’n bietjie liefde, André Schwartz pays tribute to mentors and artist friends who helped shape his career. And in Verweef, Corneil Müller creates an intimate world in which voice, cello and piano merge in a poetic reflection on memory and meaning.
Students from the Waterfront Theatre School showcase their talent in Encore, featuring singing, acting and dance. In The Magic of Musicals: From Good to Great, Northlink College students bring favourite musical theatre numbers to the stage with flair.
Sands of time
Dansproduksies soos Sbo Ndaba’s Bolero, Unmute en Sands of Time fokus op die liggaam as draer van storie, emosie en betekenis.
In Sbo Ndaba’s Bolero bring SboNdaba Dance ’n asemrowende versmelting van kontemporêre dans en Afrika-ritmes na die verhoog met ’n groot ensemble wat fisieke krag en emosionele intensiteit kombineer.
Unmute, gechoreografeer deur Andile Vellem, gebruik Suid-Afrikaanse Gebaretaal as primêre bewegingstaal en bring dansers met uiteenlopende fisieke vermoëns saam in ’n verbeeldingryke werk oor kommunikasie en inklusiwiteit.
Sands of Time deur die Jacqui Pells Balletskool ondersoek tyd en verganklikheid deur elegante choreografie en beweging.
Dance productions such as Sbo Ndaba’s Bolero, Unmute and Sands of Time focus on the body as a carrier of story, emotion and meaning.
In Sbo Ndaba’s Bolero, SboNdaba Dance brings a breathtaking fusion of contemporary dance and African rhythms to the stage, with a large ensemble that showcases physical power and emotional intensity.
Unmute, choreographed by Andile Vellem, uses South African Sign Language as its primary movement language and brings together dancers with diverse physical abilities in an imaginative work about communication and inclusivity.
Sands of Time by the Jacqui Pells Ballet School explores time and transience through elegant choreography and movement.
