Sewe: SOF play becomes Silwerskerm short film

Karlé Briedenhann se drama wat in 2024 op die planke by Suidoosterfees was, Sewe, maak ’n buiging by vanjaar se Silwerskermfees in ’n splinternuwe formaat.

Die verhoogdrama was tydens die 21ste Suidoosterfees onder regie van Albert Maritz op die NATi Teaterfeesprogram. Briedenhann, wat die teks geskryf het, het saam met Johan Falck op die verhoog verskyn. In die kortfilmweergawe wat in Augustus by die Silwerskermfees première, speel Viljé Maritz en Ira Blanckenberg teenoor Karlé.

Sewe handel oor Michelle en Francois, ’n paartjjie wat in ’n gewelddadige verhouding vasgevang is. Die titel verwys na die gemiddelde aantal probeerslae wat dit verg voordat iemand ’n verhouding waarin mishandeling die bootoon voer, verlaat.

Karlé Briedenhann’s play Sewe, which was staged at the Suidoosterfees in 2024, makes its screen debut at this year’s Silwerskerm Film Festival in a brand-new format.

The stage production, directed by Albert Maritz, was part of the NATi Theatre Festival programme during the 21st Suidoosterfees. Briedenhann, who also wrote the script, performed alongside Johan Falck. In the short film version, premiering this August at the Silwerskerm Festival, Viljé Maritz and Ira Blanckenberg star opposite Karlé.

Sewe tells the story of Michelle and Francois, a couple trapped in an abusive relationship. The title refers to the average number of attempts it takes for someone to leave a relationship in which abuse dominates.

Karlé shares more about the short film

Karlé, jy was die skrywer en vervaardiger van Sewe én speel die hoofrol van Michelle. Hoe het dit gebeur?

Toneelspel is my eerste liefde, maar ek het besluit om nog so ’n paar vaardighede te ontwikkel en vir myself werk te skep. Daarom het ek in 2024 die toneelstuk Sewe vir die Suidoosterfees geskryf. Ná die fees is die konsep vir die Silwerskermfees aanvaar, maar die finale draaiboek is heeltemal anders as die toneelteks.

Ek het die skryf-olifant happie vir happie geëet. Ná ons deur die voorleggingsproses gegaan en gehoor het ons teks is gekeur, was nie een van die vervaardigers wat ons genader het, beskikbaar nie. En toe is dit eintlik ook ’n seëning, want nou is ek volwaardig aktrise, vervaardiger én skrywer. Een teks het soveel deure oopgemaak.

Ek moes ook nes almal anders ’n oudisie vir die rol van Michelle aflê.

Hoe het jy kop gehou met die verskillende aspekte van die produksie waarby jy betrokke was?

In een van ons eerste gesprekke het Wim Steyn van IdeaCandy vir my gesê ek moet eers my skrywershoed opsit, en dit dan afhaal om nét aktrise te wees. Mens kan nogal soos ’n vreeslike micro-manager klink, maar ek wil eintlik regtig net speel. En tog was dit ook ’n geskenk, want die skrywer in my het die vervaardiger gehelp. Toe die finale weergawe van die draaiboek klaar was, het ek dit met ’n rustige hart in ons regisseur, Ingrid Paulus, se hande geplaas en vir haar gesê: “Dis nou joune.”

Sewe belig huishoudelike geweld. Waarom het jy juis hierdie tema aangepak?

Ek het lank met die konsep rondgeloop en toe dit my nie los nie, het ek besluit om navorsing te doen en die draaiboek te skryf. Die eerste saadjie wat vir die storie geplant is, was toe ek die statistiek hoor dat dit gemiddeld sewe probeerslae verg voordat iemand wegstap uit ’n verhouding waarin hulle mishandel word.

In my binnekring het mense bespiegel oor waarom iemand nie net haar man los nie, maar aanhou baklei vir haar huwelik. Mense oordeel maklik, maar situasies is meestal baie kompleks. Ek wou probeer verstaan wat die ‘hoekom’ is, en as aktrise het die karakterpad wat so iemand stap my ge-trigger.

Was dit uitdagende materiaal om mee te werk as skrywer en aktrise, maar ook as vrou?

Een van die uitdagings was die feit dat ek glad nie Michelle se verwysingsraamwerk deel nie, want ek is baie gelukkig getroud. Ek het geweet die storie moet met respek en sonder sensasie vertel word, en ek moes ’n balans vind tussen sensitiwiteit en wat steeds vir kykers interessant sou wees.

’n Kliniese sielkundige het my gelei om betroubare bronne te vind sodat ek die magspel tussen die karakters kon verstaan. Die Michelle wat die verhouding aangeknoop het, is nié die Michelle wat op die ou einde die groot besluit moet neem nie.

Ingrid Paulus is bekend vir haar rol in 7de Laan en deesdae as regisseur by Suidooster. Was dit lekker om saam met haar te werk?

Ek vertrou haar ten volle, veral omdat sy in die eerste plek ’n aktrise is. Ek en Zak Hendrikz, my medevervaardiger, het iemand gesoek wat die werk sou verstaan. Ingrid het ook met my saamgestem dat ons nie ’n advertensieveldtog teen huishoudelike geweld wou maak nie, maar ’n storie moes vertel wat eg en eerbaar is, sodat ons ’n bietjie van ’n lig kan skyn op emosionele en verbale mishandeling, op gaslighting en op die misbruik wat in verhoudings plaasvind.

Die kinematografie, beligting en klankbaan dra by tot die storievertelling, nie waar nie?

Johannes Pieter Nel, die kinematograaf en hoofbeligtingstegnikus, asook Ingrid en almal wat deel van die projek was, het in alle opsigte saamgewerk om die storie op die bes moontlike manier te vertel. Wesley West se komposisies is nie liries nie, maar maak baie op klank staat om ’n gevoel te skep. Dít vang die emosie vas.

My sussie, Madri Muller, is ’n violis en ek het haar nadergehark om die vioolspel te doen. Dit was uitdagend vir haar om die krapperige, ‘lelike’ klanke te speel. Maar toe alles bymekaarkom, was dit magic.

Hoekom moet mense die fliek kyk?

Want dis ongelukkig relevant – huishoudelike geweld gebeur elke dag. As aktrise word jy geleer jy kan jou karakter nie eerlik vertolk as jy haar veroordeel nie. En daarom het ek die storie veral geskryf vir mense buite sulke situasies, sodat hulle insig en empatie vir vroue soos Michelle kan kry.

Vroue in sulke verhoudings is vasgekeer, en as jy so iemand veroordeel, kan jy nie ’n hand gee om te help nie. Ek wou lig werp oor wat agter die mure van iemand se huis aangaan en dit is ook hoekom ons gekies het om die storie in ’n gegoede huis te laat afspeel, met netjiese, spierwit meubels en Woolworths-kos in die yskas.

Karlé, you wrote and produced Sewe and also play the lead role of Michelle. How did that come about?

Acting is my first love, but I decided to develop a few more skills and create work for myself. That’s why I wrote the stage play Sewe for the 2024 Suidoosterfees. After the festival, the concept was accepted for Silwerskermfees, but the final screenplay is completely different from the original script.

I tackled the writing process bit by bit. After going through the submission process and hearing our script had been selected, none of the producers we approached were available. And that actually turned out to be a blessing, because now I’m fully actress, producer and writer. One script opened so many doors.

I also had to audition for the role of Michelle, just like everyone else.

How did you manage to stay focused while juggling the different aspects of the production?

In one of our first conversations, Wim Steyn from IdeaCandy told me to put on my writer’s hat first, then take it off to be just an actress. You can easily come across as a micro-manager, but honestly, I just really wanted to act. And yet, it was a gift – the writer in me helped the producer. Once the final version of the script was done, I handed it over with peace in my heart to our director, Ingrid Paulus, and told her, “Now it’s yours.”

Sewe explores domestic abuse. Why did you choose this theme in particular?

The idea stayed with me for a long time, and when it wouldn’t let go, I decided to do some research and write the script. The first seed of the story was planted when I heard the statistic that it takes an average of seven attempts before someone leaves an abusive relationship.

In my circle, people would often speculate about why someone doesn’t “just leave” her husband, but keeps fighting for the marriage. It’s easy to judge, but most situations are very complex. I wanted to try to understand the “why”, and as an actress, the emotional journey of someone like that really triggered something in me.

Was it challenging material to work with as a writer and actress – and also as a woman?

One of the biggest challenges was that I don’t share Michelle’s frame of reference at all, because I’m happily married. I knew the story had to be told with respect and without sensationalism, and I had to find the balance between sensitivity and keeping the audience engaged.

A clinical psychologist guided me to trustworthy sources so I could better understand the power dynamics between the characters. The Michelle who entered the relationship is not the same Michelle who must eventually make a life-altering decision.

Ingrid Paulus is well known for her role in 7de Laan and now as a director on Suidooster. Was it a good experience working with her?

I trust her completely, especially because she’s an actress first and foremost. Zak Hendrikz, my co-producer, and I were looking for someone who would really understand the work. Ingrid also agreed with me that we didn’t want to create a public service announcement against domestic abuse – we wanted to tell a story that was real and honourable, to shine a light on emotional and verbal abuse, gaslighting and the manipulation that happens in relationships.

The cinematography, lighting and soundtrack all contribute to the storytelling, don’t they?

Johannes Pieter Nel, our cinematographer and chief lighting technician, as well as Ingrid and everyone involved in the project, collaborated on every level to tell the story in the best possible way. Wesley West’s soundscape is not lyrical, but rely heavily on sound to evoke emotion – and it works beautifully.

My sister, Madri Muller, is a violinist and I roped her in to do the violin parts. It was a challenge for her to play those scratchy, “ugly” sounds. But once it all came together, it was magic.

Why should people watch this film?

Because, unfortunately, the theme is still incredibly relevant – domestic abuse happens every day. As an actress, you’re taught that you can’t portray your character honestly if you judge her. That’s why I wrote this story especially for people outside of such situations, to help them gain insight and empathy for women like Michelle.

Women in these relationships are often trapped, and if you judge them, you can’t reach out a helping hand. I wanted to shed light on what goes on behind closed doors – and that’s why we chose to set the story in a wealthy home, with neat, white furniture and Woolworths food in the fridge.
