Suidoosterfees’s ongoing work to make the arts accessible, develop new talent and create opportunities for artists and communities received special recognition this year with a nomination for a 2026 Western Cape Government Cultural Award.
The festival was nominated in the category Most Impactful Community Arts Festival. The awards ceremony was held at Artscape on 9 September 2026 and hosted by Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie.

The nomination follows one of the most successful years in Suidoosterfees’s history. The 2026 festival presented more than 150 productions and 260 performances across a wide range of art forms – from theatre, music and dance to visual arts, literature, comedy and children and youth theatre. Approximately 3 680 temporary employment opportunities were created during the festival.
Accessibility remains central to the purpose of Suidoosterfees. Affordable tickets, free programme offerings and outreach initiatives enable people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to participate in the arts. In 2026, 36 511 tickets were issued – an increase of 11.5% on the previous year.
The festival’s community impact, however, extends far beyond its annual programme. Projects such as NATi Rising Stars, SOF Junior, Talent Search, the ATKV-Suidoosterfees Choir Competition and the High School Drama Festival create opportunities for young and emerging artists, learners and community performers to gain experience and access the professional arts sector.
Talent development also takes place throughout the year. Workshops, masterclasses, career guidance and mentorship connect young artists with experienced professional practitioners and help create sustainable career pathways into the creative industries.
The vision of Suidoosterfees, inspired by the late Prof. Jakes Gerwel, remains at the heart of this work: to make the performing arts accessible to all South Africans while creating sustainable opportunities for artists and creative practitioners.
Although Suidoosterfees did not take home the award this year, the nomination represents valuable recognition of more than two decades of work to advance cultural participation, youth development, job creation and social cohesion through the arts.
Congratulations to Ukukhanya Kwelanga Art Society, the winner in the Most Impactful Community Arts Festival category.
Suidoosterfees also thanks the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport for presenting an event that recognises the artists, cultural practitioners and organisations making a meaningful difference in communities across the province.
